Will blogging bring you wealth?

Don’t quit your day job.

I did a little secondary market research this past weekend and found a few interesting articles from credible sources about blogging experiences and profitability.  I discovered that in only few rare cases has someone made enough money blogging  to justify the time involved – lots of computer time.

Most advertisers spend very little from their respective advertising budgets on blogs; most blogs don’t capture a large enough following.  Additionally, ads placed on blogs and the like won’t generate much profit for the average blogger despite the reports to the contrary- maybe $1600 annually. One blogger achieved 500,000 visitors to their blog in one day only to generate a mere $156.00.  Don’t believe me, ask the thousand of would be pajama millionaires who only lost their tans, time and gained a few pounds trying to create blog empires in search of riches.  The old adage never fails….- “if it sounds too good to be true……”

All the best!- David

What is the role of management?

To often the manager maintains the mistaken identity of leader.  Albeit, management and leadership enjoy a symbiotic relationship of sorts the two classifications are different. Before we delve into the question of “What the primary role of the manager is” we need to make the distinction between manager and leader.

How to measure effective leadership?

I really can’t define leadership, but I know it when I see it.

                                                                                           —Anonymous

To be clear, leadership is not the same as management. Managers control, maintain, monitor, and regulate the current order.  With the advent of powerful software tools almost anyone one willing to work hard can become a manager of affairs. Leaders are much less common than managers and tend to gravitate towards the ranks of artists, scientists, and all creative thinkers alike.

Thinking of relocating?

Great resource — the Brookings Institute publishes the MetroMonitor, a quarterly, interactive barometer of the health of America’s 100 largest metropolitan economies viewed through six paradigms:

  1. Employment
  2. Unemployment
  3. Gross Metropolitan Product (GMP)
  4. Average Wages
  5. Housing Prices
  6. Real Estate Owned Properties

To summarize, San Antonio is rebounding best during the current recession, followed by Oklahoma City, Austin, Houston and Dallas.

Boise, Idaho, is performing the worst, while Riverside, Calif.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Palm Bay, Fla.; and Miami are a close second.

MBA – Pay Back

In contemplating the pursuit of the MBA graduate degree many questions come to mind; Do I attend a top tier business school?  Are the benefits of a top MBA degree that much better than a degree from that of say a top 50 school?  Should I attend a full-time or part-time program?  What is the ultimate financial return on the MBA investment?

Writing Accomplishment Statements

A study of over 2500 professional recruiters indicates that the second highest pet peeve of recruiters is the duty oriented resume written with job descriptions.  Always write accomplishment statements!

How to write an accomplishment statement:

P = problem

A = action

R = result

Identify problem you helped to solve, discuss the action taken in response to the problem and describe the results, see example below.

Job description

Tracked profit and loss throughout project duration; utilized earned value analysis methods and managed accordingly

Accomplishment Statement

Project managed and rescued over $500,000 in neglected contracts to earn a net return of more than 15%.

Good luck!

The Job Search Resume

I attended a career workshop at my university a few weeks back.  The highlight of the workshop was the panel discussion where representatives of both the public and private sector were present including a professional recruiter.  The following represents the most important items I learned:

  • The most emphasized point from the panel members was that job seekers communicate their strengths and how they will relate to the organization of interest.  Provide sound examples of experience within the resume and be sure to speak to them during the interview.
  • If making the shift to a different industry identify those skills which are transferable and focus on them.
  • Statistics indicate that the second highest pet peeve of recruiters is the duty oriented  resume written with job descriptions.

Write Accomplishment Statements!

  • Ensure to learn the lexicon of the industry of interest; include keywords or buzzwords within the resume.
  • Research, Research, Research.  Learn everything about the prospective company of employment.

MBA accreditation

In searching out graduate business schools to attend to pursue an MBA I have decided to focus on only those institutions which carry accreditation through The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).  There are hundreds of MBA programs in the U.S. but if you want your investment in a MBA to really stick ensure the program is recognized not just in your own state but internationally.  Business schools accredited through the AASCB are considered to be of the highest echelon.  You can access the list of AACSB accredited schools directly through the AACSB website:
